The Last Daughter of the Sea
Thera · Autumn, 347 BCE
In the autumn of 347 BCE, a trireme is found burning off the coast of Thera. The sole survivor — a woman, found lashed to the mast, holding a sealed clay cylinder against her chest with both hands — refuses to explain who she is, where the ship was going, or why someone set it alight. The cylinder contains the port manifests of every ship that has moved through the eastern Aegean for twelve years, recorded in a script no one living is supposed to know how to read. She says her name is Thalassa. She says this is sufficient. The men who find her cannot agree on whether that is a name or a title or a warning.
