Reader Feedback

Beta Readers

Near-final drafts. Complete, readable, but not yet copyedited. Looking for reader-experience feedback — pacing, emotional arc, clarity.

What It Involves

The beta draft stage

What you are reading

A beta draft is a complete, revised manuscript that has been through at least one round of structural editing. The story is working — or close to it. Characters behave consistently, the plot holds together, the pacing has been addressed.

What has not happened yet: copyediting, proofreading, or final line polish. You will encounter sentence-level roughness, some repetition, the occasional placeholder note left in a margin.

The question beta readers are answering is not “is this grammatically correct?” but “does this story work as a reading experience?” That means: did you want to keep reading, where did you lose momentum, did the ending feel earned, were there moments that confused you or took you out of the story.

Typical turnaround is 4 to 6 weeks. Readers who need more time should say so upfront rather than going quiet.

Out of Scope

What we are not looking for

  • Line edits or sentence rewrites
  • Proofreading or spelling corrections
  • Grammar and punctuation notes
  • Comparisons to other authors or books in the genre
  • Suggestions for different plot directions
  • Opinions on the author’s research choices

These are useful at other stages. At the beta stage, they create noise around the signal that actually matters.

Who This Is For

The ideal beta reader

Reads the genre

Has a working knowledge of historical fiction and maritime adventure. Can recognize genre conventions and notice when the book departs from them — and whether that departure earns its keep.

Finishes what they start

Completes books, including books they are not wholly enjoying. Partial reads produce incomplete feedback, and incomplete feedback is difficult to act on.

Writes thoughtful feedback

Can articulate a reaction beyond “I liked it” or “this felt slow.” Has experience giving constructive feedback on creative work, formally or informally.
