Early Drafts

Alpha Readers

First drafts. Sometimes structurally broken. Not for general distribution — for people comfortable with work in progress and willing to give structural feedback.

What to Expect

What an alpha draft looks like

An alpha draft is the first complete pass through a manuscript. It has a beginning, middle, and end — but the pacing may be wrong, a subplot may be underdeveloped, a character’s motivation may be inconsistent, or entire scenes may be placeholders for something that needs to be written properly.

Alpha readers are reading for structural problems, not surface ones. Line edits, proofreading, typo corrections — none of that is useful at this stage. What matters is whether the story is working: whether the tension is in the right places, whether the characters feel real, whether the historical detail serves the narrative or weighs it down.

You will receive a manuscript that has not been through a copyeditor. In some cases it will not have been through a second pass by the author. This is intentional — the goal is an unmediated response to the story in its early form.

On confidentiality: Alpha manuscripts are not final work. They may change substantially before publication. Contents should not be shared, summarized publicly, or discussed outside your direct conversation with the author.

Expectations

What is expected of you

Read the full manuscript

Partial reads produce partial feedback. The structural problems that matter most often appear in the second half.

Give structural feedback

Comment on plot logic, pacing, character motivation, and whether the story is earning its emotional beats. Not grammar, not word choice.

Respond within the agreed timeline

Timelines are set at the start of each reading arrangement. If you cannot meet it, say so early rather than going quiet.

Keep the contents confidential

Do not share the manuscript, quote from it publicly, or discuss plot details in any public forum before the book is published.

What You Receive

In return

  • Credit in the acknowledgments of the finished book
  • A signed finished copy when the book is published
  • Direct access to the author for questions during and after the reading period
  • The opportunity to continue as a beta reader on subsequent drafts if you wish
  • Early knowledge of what the book is before any public announcement

About Applications

By invitation or personal connection

Alpha reading is arranged through invitation or personal connection. If you received this link from the author, or from someone who knows the author and suggested you reach out, you are welcome to apply using the form below.

General applications from readers with no prior connection are respectfully redirected. If you are interested in early access to work in progress, the ARC program or the Street Team are the appropriate routes.

This is not about exclusivity. Alpha reading works because it requires a level of trust and directness that takes time to build. The feedback has to be honest, and that is easier between people who already have some basis for the conversation.
