Advance Readers

ARC Readers

Early copies of new books in exchange for honest public reviews. The record depends on readers willing to document it.

How It Works

From application to review

  1. Apply below. Applications are reviewed when a new book enters the ARC cycle, typically 6 to 8 weeks before publication.

  2. Approved readers receive the book 4 to 6 weeks before the publication date, with time to read at a reasonable pace.

  3. Read the book. You are not required to finish if it is not working for you — notify the author and you will be removed from that cycle without penalty.

  4. Post your honest review on at least one public platform on or shortly after publication day. The author will notify you of the exact date.

Formats

Formats available

Ebook ARC

ARCs are distributed as ebook files, either via NetGalley or by direct download. ePub, Mobi, and PDF are available on request.

Print ARCs are not produced for most titles. Any exception will be noted in the ARC invitation.

ARC files are for your personal use only. Redistribution is not permitted.

Requirements

These apply to all ARC readers without exception

  • You have a Goodreads or Amazon account with at least three prior reviews posted publicly.
  • You will post your review within two weeks of the publication date — on or after the date, not before.
  • Your review must be your honest assessment. Positive reviews are not required. Critical and mixed reviews are accepted and respected.
  • Your review will say that you received a free advance copy. Review sites and the FTC require this disclosure.
  • You will not share, distribute, or post excerpts from the ARC file without explicit permission.
  • You will notify the author if you are unable to complete the book or meet the review deadline.

Worth Knowing

When ARC reading is not the right fit

ARC reading is not the right arrangement if you are new to reviewing and would feel uncomfortable posting a public opinion, if you do not have an established reading presence online, or if you prefer to read books after they are fully published and settled.

There is nothing wrong with any of those things. The ARC program depends on readers who are comfortable with the specific obligation to post publicly, and filling that roster with reluctant reviewers does not serve anyone well.

Readers who want early access without the review commitment may be better suited to the beta reading or Street Team programs.

The Last Daughter of the Sea

Thera · Autumn, 347 BCE

She had been called many things by the men who found her. Foundling. Witch. Consecrated. She had not corrected any of them.

In the autumn of 347 BCE, a trireme is found burning off the coast of Thera. The sole survivor — a woman, found lashed to the mast, holding a sealed clay cylinder against her chest with both hands — refuses to explain who she is, where the ship was going, or why someone set it alight. The cylinder contains the port manifests of every ship that has moved through the eastern Aegean for twelve years, recorded in a script no one living is supposed to know how to read. She says her name is Thalassa. She says this is sufficient. The men who find her cannot agree on whether that is a name or a title or a warning.

ARC cycles open about 6 to 8 weeks before publication. Applications are held on file until then.
